FOREWORD
Astronomy,
the understanding of the Cosmos and humankind’s role in this entity, is
the root of
all science. After nearly 4000 years
of naked-eye astronomy,
Galileo initiated 400 years of powerful
telescopic astronomy followed by 40 years of space astronomy. In each of
these periods, gathered information about Universe overcome previous ones.
This is a multidisciplinary, crossdisciplinary and interdisciplinary science
which could be illustrated by latest development of astrobiology and
astrogeophysics, and also a spectacular example of
the acceleration of science.
Among
reasons to organize the first Summer School in Astronomy and Geophysics are:
-An
increasing number of universities are offering courses of astrogeophysics
as part of combinations within Astronomy and Earth science degrees.
-Lunar
exploration is back to the international space exploration
programme, with missions planned by
USA,
China
and
India. ESA is also considering lunar missions within the context of both its
Cosmic Visions and Aurora programmes. Consequently, Astrogeophysicists will be required as mission scientists and technologists, and
for scientific explorations.
With
the First Summer School we wish to give opportunity to students and
young researchers to enlarge their knowledge and to obtain information about
scientific research in the interdisciplinary topics of Astrobiology and
Astrogeophysics.
